PCOS
PCOS
PCOS support with time to look at symptoms properly, review what may be driving them, and plan the right next step.
ASSESSMENT

LONG-TERM
Management
Not a one-off appointment
PCOS can show up in different ways. Irregular periods, acne, unwanted hair growth, weight change, fertility concerns and changes in mood or energy can all be part of the picture.
At Basuto Medical Centre, our women’s health service helps patients who want a more joined-up discussion of PCOS rather than one symptom looked at in isolation. Some come because they think they may have PCOS. Others have already been given the diagnosis and want clearer support around treatment, blood tests, fertility or long-term management.
Symptoms
Common symptoms of PCOS
- Irregular, infrequent or absent periods
- Acne or oily skin
- Excess hair growth (hirsutism)
- Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
- Hair thinning on the scalp
- Fertility concerns
- Mood changes, fatigue, low energy
Diagnosis
How PCOS is assessed
PCOS is diagnosed based on a combination of symptoms, blood tests and sometimes ultrasound. Your GP will review your menstrual history, symptoms, weight, skin and any previous investigations.
Blood tests may include testosterone, SHBG, LH, FSH, thyroid function, glucose and insulin levels. Not every patient needs every test — your GP will decide which are relevant based on your clinical picture.
Management
Treatment and management options
PCOS management depends on the symptoms that matter most to you. That may include lifestyle and weight management, medication for acne or excess hair growth, hormonal contraception to regulate periods, metformin for insulin resistance, or support around fertility.
Where specialist input is needed, your GP can arrange a referral to gynaecology, endocrinology or fertility services. PCOS is a long-term condition — ongoing review with membership makes that simpler.
“I had a very positive experience today at Basuto Medical Centre, as I always do. Dr Al-Saraf was very helpful and understanding.”

WHY BASUTO
How the Practice Works
Basuto Medical Centre is an established, CQC-regulated private GP practice in Parsons Green. Our practice is structured around prompt access, adequate consultation time and clear clinical follow-through: patients should be able to access experienced medical care quickly, have enough time to explain what is going on properly, and leave knowing what happens next.
01
Same-day, where possible
Prompt access is one of the main reasons patients choose private GP care. We aim to keep same-day appointments available for concerns that should not be left to drift.

03
Prescriptions & referrals included
Prescriptions and referral letters can usually be arranged during the same appointment where clinically appropriate.
04
Your NHS GP stays the same
Using Basuto does not affect your NHS registration. Many patients use private GP care alongside NHS services.
