Sometimes the main reason for booking a GP appointment is straightforward. You need a prescription arranged, regular medication reviewed, or advice on whether the treatment you are taking is still the right one.

At Basuto Medical Centre, we provide private GP prescription support for adults, children and families, including private prescriptions, repeat prescriptions, medication reviews and follow-up advice where appropriate. Some patients come because they need treatment quickly. Others want to review medication they have been taking for some time, particularly if things have changed or side effects have become a concern.

Prescribing is part of clinical decision-making. The aim is not simply to issue medication, but to make sure the treatment still fits the problem, is being used safely, and remains appropriate in the context of your wider health.

Part of GP Care

Prescribing within the broader consultation

Many prescriptions are issued as part of a wider GP consultation rather than as a standalone request. You may attend with a chest infection, worsening pain, urinary symptoms, sleep difficulties, a skin flare-up, a hormonal problem or another issue where medication may or may not be appropriate.

In those cases, the prescription sits within the broader medical judgement of the appointment. Antibiotics require evidence of bacterial infection. Pain medication requires assessment of the cause. Hormonal treatments require baseline review. Controlled drugs require particular caution. The consultation exists to make those judgements properly. If further investigation is needed, your GP can also arrange blood tests, referral or follow-up through the same practice.

Repeat Prescriptions

Repeat prescriptions with appropriate review

Repeat prescriptions can often be arranged where the medication remains suitable and enough information is available to prescribe safely. In some cases, a simple review is all that is needed. In others, your GP may recommend a medication review before continuing treatment.

This is particularly relevant where the medication has been taken for some time, where symptoms have changed, or where monitoring is normally required. Some medications need periodic blood pressure checks, blood tests or clinical review before they can be safely continued. Others carry interactions or side effects that should be reassessed if your health has changed. A medication review is not about making prescribing more difficult. It is about making sure treatment is still doing what it was prescribed to do.

Medication Reviews

When treatment has been going on for some time

Medication review is often the most useful part of the appointment when treatment no longer feels quite right. Your GP will review what you are taking, why it was started, whether it is helping, whether side effects have developed, and whether anything needs adjusting or checking further.

Online or In Person?

Choosing the right type of prescription appointment

Many prescription and medication review appointments can be handled via video consultation, particularly where discussion is the main requirement. If examination, monitoring or testing is likely to be needed, an in-person appointment may be more appropriate.

If you need a more urgent review, a same-day private GP appointment may also be possible depending on availability.

Wider Context

Prescribing Within Wider GP Care

Medication sometimes needs broader context. A repeat prescription may need blood pressure review, blood tests, a check for side effects or a clearer diagnosis before treatment is continued.

That is why prescription care at Basuto connects naturally with blood tests, health screening, specialist referral and wider private GP care.

Understanding Your Needs

Straightforward renewal or review first?

Continuing Regular Treatment

Some repeat prescriptions are relatively simple, especially where the medication is established, clearly helping, and nothing important has changed medically. These can often be handled via an online appointment.

Reviewing Medication

If symptoms have changed, the medication no longer seems to be helping, or monitoring is needed, the repeat request becomes part of a wider medication review. Your GP may adjust the dose or suggest alternatives.

Checking Appropriateness

Some patients want a second opinion on long-term medication, or need blood tests to check whether treatment is still safe and suitable before it continues. Your GP will explain whether further checks are needed.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a prescription without registering?

Yes. You can book directly without registering. Bring details of your current medication and any relevant medical history.

Can repeat prescriptions be handled online?

Often, yes. If your medication is stable and no examination is needed, an online appointment can work well.

Will I need blood tests before my prescription is renewed?

It depends on the medication. Some treatments require periodic blood monitoring. Your GP will explain whether tests are needed.

Can you prescribe medication I was taking from another GP?

In most cases, yes — provided your GP is satisfied the medication is still appropriate. Bring any documentation you have about your current treatment.

How much does a prescription appointment cost?

A standard GP consultation is £150 for 30 minutes. The prescription is included. Membership patients have prescriptions included as part of their plan.

Same-day appointments available. Book online or call 020 7736 7557.
