The 6-week baby check is an important early review for newborns and their parents. It provides time to assess your baby’s growth, feeding, weight gain, general development and any concerns that have emerged since birth. It is also a chance for parents to ask practical questions in a setting that does not feel rushed.

At Basuto Medical Centre, we provide private 6 week baby checks in Fulham for parents who want a careful newborn review, continuity with an experienced GP practice, and clear advice on what is normal, what to keep an eye on, and what to do next if something needs follow-up.

Whether this is your first baby or not, the appointment is a chance to check development, feeding, growth and general wellbeing, while also giving you space to ask about sleep, crying, reflux, rashes, bowels, breathing, latching, weight gain, and anything else that has been on your mind.

About the Appointment

What the 6 Week Check Covers

Some parents book because they simply want a thorough private check and more time than they expect elsewhere. Others come because they have a specific concern: feeding difficulties, reflux, colic, slow weight gain, noisy breathing, unsettled sleep, skin changes, constipation, or a general sense that they would like someone experienced to assess their baby properly.

If your GP thinks something needs further review, that can be arranged. If everything looks reassuring, the appointment can still be valuable because it gives parents a calmer space to ask questions and feel more confident about the weeks ahead. For families who want continuity beyond this stage, the appointment sits naturally within wider private GP and paediatric care.

Your Appointment

What happens at a 6 week baby check?

A good 6 week baby check should feel calm, thorough and reassuring.

At the start of the appointment, your doctor will usually ask how things have been going since birth. That may include feeding, weight gain, sleep, crying, settling, nappies, reflux, skin changes, breathing, and any concerns you have noticed at home. This is also the point where parents can raise smaller worries that may have been building up over the first few weeks.

Your GP will then examine your baby properly. This usually includes a general physical assessment, listening to the heart and chest, checking eyes, hips, abdomen, skin, tone, reflexes and overall development. The aim is to make sure your baby seems to be progressing as expected and to identify anything that may need a closer look.

If something needs follow-up, your doctor will explain that clearly. If everything looks reassuring, you still leave with a better understanding of how your baby is doing and what to look out for over the next stage. Because appointments are 30 minutes as standard, there is enough time for questions.

Why Parents Book

Why a private 6 week baby check can be so helpful

The six-week stage is often when parents begin to settle into a rhythm, but it is also when a lot of smaller worries tend to build up. A proper 6 week baby check can help because it brings everything together in one place.

  • Reassurance that your baby seems to be growing and developing well
  • A proper physical examination in a calm setting
  • Time to ask about feeding, reflux, sleep and settling
  • Review of skin, breathing, bowels and general wellbeing
  • Clear advice on what is normal and what may need monitoring
  • Joined-up follow-up if another appointment is needed

Common Concerns

Questions parents often bring to the 6 week check

Even when a baby appears well, parents often arrive with a mental list of questions. Some are about normal newborn behaviour. Others are about symptoms that may or may not matter. A proper appointment gives space to sort through both.

  • Is my baby feeding enough?
  • Should they be gaining more weight by now?
  • Is reflux normal, or does it need looking into?
  • Is this rash normal baby skin, or something else?
  • Is their breathing pattern normal?
  • Do they seem to be developing normally?

Not every concern turns out to be a problem. But having a doctor go through these things properly can be very reassuring, and where something does need attention, it is better to pick it up early.

Follow-Up

If something needs another look, you can stay within the same practice

Most 6 week baby checks are reassuring. Sometimes, though, a further appointment is useful. That may be because feeding is still difficult, weight gain needs reviewing, reflux or constipation is ongoing, a rash is not settling, or a parent simply wants continuity over the next few months.

Families can return for wider paediatric support, a follow-up private GP appointment, or related care such as childhood immunisations if relevant. That continuity matters, especially for families who want an established private practice they can come back to.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is a 6 week baby check?

A 6 week baby check is a routine review of your baby’s health, growth and early development. It is also a chance for parents to raise any concerns and have their baby examined properly.

What does the doctor look for during the appointment?

Your GP will usually review general wellbeing, feeding, growth, heart, chest, hips, abdomen, skin, tone, reflexes and early development, as well as any specific concerns you have noticed at home.

What if I am worried about reflux, weight gain or settling?

That is exactly the kind of thing this appointment is useful for. Your doctor can talk these concerns through properly and examine your baby in context.

Can I book even if I am still registered with my NHS GP?

Yes. You do not need to leave your NHS GP to book a private baby check at Basuto.

Is this only for first-time parents?

No. Many second- or third-time parents also value the reassurance of a proper check and the chance to discuss anything that feels different this time around.

What if my baby needs another appointment afterwards?

If follow-up would help, you can stay within the same practice for wider paediatric or private GP care.

How do I book?

You can book online or call 020 7736 7557 to arrange your baby’s appointment.
