RESULTS

GP-reviewed results with clear next steps
Patients booking a private blood test want to understand whether a symptom, deficiency, hormone change or general health concern has a physical explanation, and what the next step should be.
That is why blood tests at Basuto Medical Centre are used as part of a wider clinical assessment, with decisions about testing guided by symptoms, history and clinical judgement. A result only becomes useful when it is tied to the right clinical question. In practice, that means understanding your symptoms properly first, choosing sensible tests rather than ordering everything indiscriminately, and then reviewing the results in a way that is clear, practical and medically grounded.
Some patients book because they want faster access than they have been able to find elsewhere. Some want more time than a short appointment usually allows. Others want continuity, especially if blood tests may lead to treatment, monitoring, referral or broader screening. Blood tests are not always the right first step. Sometimes examination, imaging or a full consultation matters more than blood work alone. Part of the value of a GP-led appointment is deciding what is likely to help and what is unlikely to add much. Where testing is appropriate, the aim is straightforward: arrange it, review the results properly, and move things forward.
How Blood Testing Works
Private Blood Testing with Clinical Oversight
At Basuto, every blood test appointment starts with a 30-minute clinical discussion. Your doctor reviews your symptoms, medical history and medication, considers what is likely and decides which tests are worth ordering.
If you need follow-up after results come back — whether that is a prescription, repeat testing, referral or wider review — this can often be arranged through the same practice without starting again elsewhere.
You do not need to register with us to book, and you do not need to leave your NHS GP. Many patients use private blood testing alongside NHS care when they want faster access, more time, or clearer clinical interpretation. Every result is reviewed by the GP who ordered the test, explained in context, and linked to a clear next step.

GP-LED TESTING
GP-Led Blood Testing
Private blood testing is widely available, but clinical value depends on what is tested and why. Broad panels can appear thorough, yet testing without focused reasoning can produce borderline results that are difficult to interpret, false reassurance where a different test would have been more informative, or unnecessary follow-up. A clinically guided approach is usually more efficient and more helpful.
At Basuto Medical Centre, blood testing sits within wider private GP care with clinical context guiding both the testing plan and the interpretation of results. Your GP looks at your symptoms, medical background, current medication and any relevant history before deciding what is worth checking. That helps avoid unnecessary testing and makes it more likely that the results will actually be useful.
This matters most with common concerns such as fatigue, where the useful question is not simply which tests to order but what is most likely to explain the symptoms. It matters in hormonal health, where timing and clinical context influence whether a result is meaningful. And it matters in preventive care, where blood markers are best understood alongside blood pressure, family history and overall health rather than as isolated values. Focused testing with clinical reasoning behind it is almost always more useful than a broad panel ordered without context.
“I wanted answers quickly and did not want to be left trying to interpret results on my own. The doctor explained everything clearly and made the next steps very straightforward.”

Your Appointment
What happens at a blood test appointment?
Your appointment follows a structured process designed to keep things efficient and clinically thorough.
At the start of your appointment, your doctor will talk through your symptoms, concerns, medical history and what you are hoping to understand. If you already know the type of blood test you want, that can be discussed. In many cases, though, the more useful approach is for a GP to decide which tests actually make sense based on the bigger picture.
Your GP will then explain what they are checking for, why those tests are relevant, and what the possible next steps could be depending on the result. If testing is appropriate, the bloods can then be arranged. Once the results are back, your doctor reviews them and explains what they mean in plain language. Sometimes that next step is reassurance. Sometimes it is treatment. Sometimes it is repeat testing, monitoring, a referral, or a broader review through one of our health checks. Often, it is a combination. What matters is that the process moves things forward.
With 30 minutes, there is usually time to discuss symptoms, agree on the right tests, and understand what the results may indicate before any blood is drawn.

WHEN PATIENTS USUALLY BOOK
When Blood Tests Can Help
Blood tests can be useful in several situations. They may help investigate symptoms such as tiredness, weight change, hair loss, hormonal changes or a general sense that something is not right. They are also often used as part of preventive care to review cholesterol, blood sugar, thyroid function, liver health and cardiovascular risk, or to monitor an existing condition and assess how treatment is working over time.
They can be particularly helpful when symptoms are persistent but not clearly explained. Common examples include fatigue and low energy, where tests might look at full blood count, iron levels, thyroid function, vitamin B12 and vitamin D; hormone-related concerns, including menopause symptoms and menstrual changes through women’s health, or low testosterone through men’s health; and follow-up testing for thyroid conditions, medication response or wider treatment monitoring.
Blood tests also support earlier identification of common problems such as vitamin deficiencies, blood sugar imbalance, cholesterol changes, thyroid disorders and some hormonal issues. At Basuto, results lead to a conversation about what was found and what should follow — not a raw data sheet.

Results and Follow-Up
Results Review and Clinical Follow-Up
When results are back, the next step depends on what was found. Blood tests, health checks and health screening differ. Blood tests are usually the most targeted route — you book because there is a specific question or symptom. Health checks are broader GP-led reviews that may include blood tests as part of a wider assessment. Health screening suits patients whose emphasis is on prevention and risk review rather than a single concern.
If your GP thinks a blood test will help clarify the picture, we can arrange that quickly. If medication or treatment is appropriate once results return, a prescription can be discussed. If you need repeat testing, referral or broader assessment, this can also be organised through the same practice. Your GP can also advise whether a broader route through health checks, women’s health or men’s health would be more useful overall.
This keeps the process efficient. You are not left interpreting numbers on your own, and any follow-up action can usually begin without delay. If blood tests are not the right starting point, or if results suggest a broader review is needed, your GP will explain the options clearly.

Common Questions
Common Questions About Blood Tests
Do I need a GP consultation to get a blood test?
Usually, yes. A GP consultation helps make sure the right blood tests are ordered and that the results are interpreted properly in context. This tends to be more useful than testing without clinical oversight.
How quickly do blood test results come back?
Most routine blood results are available within 24 to 72 hours, depending on which tests are ordered.
Can I review my blood test results online?
Yes. Result review can often be handled by phone or video, especially for follow-up or monitoring bloods where no examination is needed.
What happens if something is abnormal?
Your GP will explain what the result may mean and recommend the next step. That could include treatment, repeat testing, monitoring, lifestyle advice or referral.
How much do private blood tests cost?
Blood tests are usually arranged through a £150 GP consultation. Test charges vary depending on what is ordered. Membership patients may find this more cost-effective if they expect to use the practice regularly.
Can I book a blood test even if I am not registered with the practice?
Yes. You do not need to register with us to book a private blood test appointment, and you can still keep your NHS GP.
Do you offer hormone blood tests?
Yes, where clinically appropriate. Hormone testing may be relevant for menopause symptoms, menstrual changes, fertility questions, low testosterone and other endocrine concerns.
Can blood tests be part of a health check?
Yes. Blood work is often part of our broader health checks and preventive screening services.
Do you test children as well as adults?
Yes, we do. We can advise on blood testing for adults and for children where clinically appropriate. If blood testing is likely to be difficult or not the best first step, we will say so clearly.
