BLOOD TESTS
Where Needed
Cardiovascular, hormonal and metabolic checks
Erectile dysfunction is common, but that does not make it easy to talk about. Many patients want a clear, discreet appointment where they can explain what has been happening and get practical advice without feeling rushed or embarrassed.
ED is common, treatable, and — as part of a broader men’s health assessment — and, importantly, sometimes the first sign of cardiovascular disease, diabetes or hormonal problems. A proper assessment is not just about getting a prescription. It is about understanding why it is happening.
Common Causes
Common causes of erectile dysfunction
ED can be caused by cardiovascular problems, diabetes, hormonal imbalances (including low testosterone), medication side effects, stress, anxiety or psychological factors. Often it is a combination.
That is why a proper GP assessment matters. Understanding the cause determines the right treatment.
Your Appointment
What happens in the appointment
Your GP will discuss your symptoms in a calm, discreet setting. That includes when the problem started, how it has progressed, relevant medical history, medication, lifestyle factors and any psychological aspects.
Blood tests may be recommended to check cardiovascular risk, cholesterol, diabetes markers, hormone levels and thyroid function. From there, your GP will discuss treatment options, lifestyle advice, or specialist referral where needed.
Treatment
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Where medication is appropriate, your GP can issue a private prescription. Where lifestyle factors are involved, practical advice on exercise, weight, alcohol and stress may be part of the plan.
If specialist input is needed — urology, endocrinology or psychological support — your GP can arrange a referral directly. The aim is to address the problem properly, not just mask it.
“I’d been putting it off for months, but the appointment felt straightforward and properly clinical. The GP listened, arranged the right tests, and explained clearly what needed to happen next.”
