When a child is unwell, parents usually need three things: prompt access, a careful examination, and a clear plan. The role of a private paediatric GP appointment is not to make children’s health feel more complicated. It is to make the first step more accessible, more thorough, and easier to act on.

At Basuto Medical Centre, our paediatric appointments are designed for babies, children and young people who need assessment for new symptoms, ongoing concerns, follow-up, or reassurance after a change in health. Some families book because they want a same-day appointment. Others want more time than they are used to in a standard consultation. Many want continuity with a named doctor who can review the wider picture.

Whether your child has a fever, rash, ear infection, feeding issue, developmental concern, or needs a routine check such as a 6-week baby check or childhood immunisations, we aim to make the process straightforward from the first appointment. This includes access to same-day appointments, onward specialist referrals, and private prescriptions where appropriate.

About the Practice

How Paediatric Appointments Work

Private paediatric GP care is useful when you want your child assessed promptly and properly. That includes common acute presentations such as fever, cough, ear pain, sore throat, rashes, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and urinary symptoms. It also includes issues that are not necessarily urgent but still need proper review, such as repeated infections, headaches, tiredness, feeding issues, eczema flare-ups, sleep concerns, weight changes, bowel symptoms, or questions about development, or travel vaccine planning for children.

Our children’s appointments are designed to give your GP enough time to take a proper history, examine your child carefully, explain what they think may be going on, and talk through the next step. If your child needs blood tests, medication, follow-up or specialist referral, these can often be arranged as part of the same visit.

You do not need to register with us to book, and you do not need to leave your NHS GP. Many families use private GP care alongside NHS services when they want faster access, more time, or continuity with a named doctor.

Same-Day Access

Same-day paediatric appointments in Fulham

One of the main reasons parents choose a private GP is speed. If your child is unwell now, has worsened, or is simply not themselves, you may not want to wait days just to begin the process.

We keep same-day appointments available wherever possible so children can be assessed promptly. If you need advice but cannot attend in person, an online appointment may also be appropriate. If an examination is likely to be important, we will advise you to come into the practice instead.

What parents usually find most useful is not simply faster access. It is having enough time for the doctor to examine their child thoroughly, explain what they have found, and set out a clear next step.

“Our 8-month-old had a high fever and the NHS couldn’t see us for three days. Basuto saw us the same afternoon. The GP was thorough, reassuring and prescribed exactly what was needed.”

Your Appointment

What happens at a private paediatric appointment?

Parents usually know quite quickly whether a doctor is taking their child’s symptoms seriously.

At the start of your appointment, your doctor will talk through your child’s symptoms, what has changed, how long things have been going on, any relevant medical background, and what you are most concerned about. If an examination is needed, this can be carried out during the consultation.

Your GP will then explain what they think may be going on, whether treatment or tests are needed, and what the next step should be. Sometimes that next step is reassurance. Sometimes it is a prescription, blood test, follow-up, or specialist referral. Often, it is a combination.

Because appointments are longer than many parents are used to, there is usually time to examine your child properly, explain the findings, discuss treatment options, and agree on a clear plan before you leave.

EVERY CONSULTATION

What May Be Arranged During Your Appointment

Everything you need from a GP visit, as standard.

Enough time for a proper conversation and assessment, especially when symptoms are complex or have been going on for some time.

Same-Day Access

We aim to keep appointments available for urgent concerns and new symptoms that should not be left to drift.

Prescriptions

Private prescriptions issued during the consultation and sent to your preferred pharmacy. Repeat prescriptions also available.

Referral Letters

NHS or private referrals to specialists, are issued promptly, at no extra charge on the membership and pay as you go plan.

Blood Tests

Follow-Up Care

Continuity

Ongoing Paediatric Care and Follow-Up

Children benefit from seeing a doctor who already knows their medical background, growth pattern and previous presentations.

Parents often tell us they value being able to come back to a doctor who knows their child’s history, understands what has already been tried, and has a fuller picture of their health. That matters for newborn checks, growth concerns, recurrent infections, developmental questions, eczema, asthma, and any issue that benefits from follow-up rather than one-off advice.

If you expect to use the practice more regularly, membership can make that continuity easier and more cost-effective. If you only need to be seen occasionally, you can simply book a pay-as-you-go appointment.

Same-day appointments available. Book online or call 020 7736 7557.

Assessment, Treatment and Referrals

Paediatric Assessment, Prescribing and Referrals

A paediatric consultation should move things forward rather than ending with reassurance alone.

If your doctor thinks blood tests would help clarify the picture, we can arrange them quickly. If treatment is appropriate, a prescription can be issued. If your child needs specialist input, we can prepare a referral to paediatrics, allergy, ENT, cardiology, neurology or other relevant services. If follow-up is needed, this can be organised through the same practice.

This is particularly important for recurring ear problems, asthma review, allergy concerns, growth and feeding issues, headaches, bowel symptoms and any problem that benefits from ongoing observation. If screening or a broader review is relevant for an older child, there is also a route to health checks. Having assessment, prescribing and referral available through the same practice means recurring concerns are tracked properly rather than managed through isolated appointments.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does my child need to be registered at Basuto?

No. You can book a one-off consultation without registering. Ongoing care works best through membership so your GP can build a continuous record of your child’s health over time.

What ages do you see?

From birth to under 16. We see babies, children and young people for a wide range of acute, ongoing and preventive health concerns.

Can Basuto prescribe antibiotics for my child?

Yes. Where a bacterial infection is clinically diagnosed, your GP can issue a private prescription at the correct paediatric dose and duration.

How much does a children’s consultation cost?

A pay-as-you-go consultation is £150 for 20–30 minutes. Under-16 membership is £55/month and includes a monthly consultation.

Can I have a 6-week check if the NHS check was already done?

Yes. Some parents choose a private check for a more thorough examination and more time for questions. Others come because their NHS check felt rushed or concerns were not properly addressed.

What if something is found at the 6-week check?

Your GP will explain what has been found, what it means clinically, and exactly what happens next. If needed, we can arrange prompt specialist referral.

Do you offer home visits for children?

Contact us on 020 7736 7557 or via contact to discuss home visit availability. For most acute childhood illnesses, a clinic visit is clinically preferable because examination facilities are more comprehensive.

Can I get a same-day appointment for my child?

In most cases, yes. Basuto keeps slots available for acutely unwell children. See same-day appointments for prompt access.

Can children have video appointments?

Yes, in some situations. Many issues still need an in-person examination, but some follow-up or advice-based consultations can work as an online appointment.

Can you arrange blood tests or wider health screening?

Yes. If clinically indicated, your GP can arrange blood tests or discuss broader health screening where appropriate.
