Cancer screening covers a range of approaches depending on age, symptoms, family history and individual risk. No single blood test can reliably detect or exclude cancer on its own. The role of a GP-led screening appointment is to assess your situation carefully, explain what testing is appropriate, and ensure that results are interpreted properly and followed up where needed.

At Basuto Medical Centre, testing is not treated as a standalone transaction. We look at it as part of wider GP care. That means understanding why the test is being done, what information will actually be useful, and what should happen once the result comes back.

Our standard appointments are 30 minutes, which gives enough time to talk through symptoms, risk factors, previous results and what kind of follow-up may be needed. Some patients want reassurance. Others want a proper route into further investigation. Both are valid reasons to book.

Why Patients Book

Why patients usually book this screening

People do not usually book cancer screening just because they want data. They book because something is worrying them, because they want clarity, or because they are trying to stay ahead of a problem.

  • Symptoms that are causing concern
  • Family history of cancer
  • Preventive check or peace of mind
  • Follow-up after previous abnormal results
  • Part of a wider health screening review

What the Appointment Covers

What the appointment should cover

Cancer screening is part of GP-led care. Your doctor will help you understand what the test looks at, why it may be useful, what the limitations are, and whether further assessment or interpretation is likely to be needed afterwards.

That explanation should feel calm and plain-English. Not every patient needs a single isolated test. Sometimes a panel, a wider health review, or a GP consultation first is the better route. Your GP will advise on what makes most sense.

After the Results

Results, follow-up and next steps

Patients want to know not only that results will come back, but what those results actually mean and what happens if something is outside the expected range.

That may include reassurance, repeat testing, lifestyle advice, medication review or specialist referral where needed. Your GP will explain clearly and help you decide what to do next.

When to seek urgent emergency care instead

A private GP appointment is appropriate for many acute illnesses and new concerns, but it is not a substitute for emergency care.

If you or someone you are with has severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, heavy bleeding, sudden confusion, loss of consciousness, a seizure, or severe allergic symptoms — call 999 or go to A&E. For everything else that needs prompt but non-emergency medical attention, a same-day private GP appointment is a sensible place to start.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a blood test check for cancer?

Some blood tests can indicate cancer risk or flag markers that need further investigation. They are not diagnostic on their own. Your GP will explain what the test can and cannot tell you.

What cancer markers do you test for?

Common markers include PSA (prostate), CA-125, and others depending on symptoms, age and risk profile. Your GP will choose the appropriate tests based on your clinical picture.

What happens if something abnormal shows up?

Your GP will explain the result honestly, what it may mean, and arrange next steps. That could include repeat testing, imaging, or a specialist referral. Many abnormal markers turn out to be benign.

Is this screening or a wider health check?

Cancer markers are often included as part of a wider executive health check or Well Man/Well Woman review. Your GP can advise on the most appropriate approach.
