REFERRAL LETTER
Included
NHS and private specialist referrals
Specialist care works best when the referral is clear, appropriate and supported by the right clinical information.
At Basuto Medical Centre, we provide private GP referrals for patients who need onward assessment, specialist treatment or a second opinion. A referral may be appropriate where symptoms need further investigation, where treatment has not resolved the problem, or where a more specialist review is needed to move things forward.
Our standard GP appointments are 30 minutes. That gives your doctor time to understand what has been happening, review relevant history, examine you where needed, and decide whether a referral is the right next step. If a referral is appropriate, we can prepare a referral letter and help you move things forward. If a specialist is not the best place to start, we will explain that clearly and talk you through what makes more sense.

Proper Assessment First
A referral should come after a proper GP assessment
Patients sometimes attend convinced they need a specialist. Sometimes they are right. Sometimes they need a GP first. That is why referrals work best when they come after a proper consultation. Your doctor needs to understand the symptoms, the timeline, what has already been tried, and whether anything has changed.
This approach is often more efficient. It can avoid unnecessary appointments, make the referral more focused, and ensure the specialist receives a clearer summary of why onward review is being requested. In some cases, it is also worth arranging investigation before the referral. Baseline blood tests, imaging discussion, or a trial of initial treatment can all make a specialist appointment more productive. A referral letter that arrives with relevant results and a clear clinical question is more useful to the specialist — and usually leads to a faster, more focused assessment for the patient.

Your Appointment
What to expect
If you book an appointment because you think you may need a referral, your GP will start by talking through what has been happening. That usually includes your symptoms, how long they have been going on, anything that has changed, relevant past medical history, medication, and what you are hoping to achieve.
From there, your GP will decide whether a specialist referral is the right next step, whether any tests should be arranged first, or whether another plan makes more sense. Sometimes the referral can be organised immediately. Sometimes the most useful outcome is a clearer plan before deciding whether specialist care is required.

Clear Next Steps
The letter is only part of the plan
Patients are often less concerned about the referral letter itself than about what comes after it. They want to know whether specialist care is really needed, who they should see, whether anything should happen first, and what to do while they are waiting.
That is why a referral appointment should not feel administrative. It should feel like part of a proper medical plan. Sometimes the referral is the answer. Sometimes the better next step is treatment, testing, monitoring or follow-up within general practice before referral is considered.
