Patient Rating

There are many occasions when a GP consultation is needed, but attendance in clinic is not. You may be at work, at home with a child, travelling, or simply trying to fit medical care around the rest of the day.

At Basuto Medical Centre, we provide secure online GP appointments for adults, children and families. Our standard appointments are 30 minutes, giving your doctor enough time to take a history properly, review symptoms carefully and explain what should happen next.

Where appropriate, your GP can issue a private prescription, arrange referral, organise follow-up or advise that you should be seen in clinic for examination.

When It Works Well

When video is a practical and effective option

  • Medication review and prescription requests
  • Review of symptoms that do not require examination
  • Follow-up after blood tests or a previous GP consultation
  • Menopause and HRT review
  • Discussion of specialist referral
  • Practical advice when travelling or unable to attend the clinic

If an examination is likely to be important, your GP will advise you to attend in person instead.

Your Appointment

What happens during an online GP appointment

An online consultation should still feel like a proper GP appointment. Your doctor will review your symptoms, relevant medical history, current medication and what you are hoping to resolve from the consultation.

Sometimes the next step is advice and reassurance. Sometimes it is a prescription, a follow-up plan or a referral. Sometimes the most appropriate outcome is to bring you into the clinic for examination or testing.

“Telephone consultancy was superb.”

Online or In Person?

Choosing the right type of appointment

A video consultation is often appropriate when the main value lies in discussion, review, prescribing or planning. An in-person appointment is usually more appropriate where physical examination, swabs, procedures or blood tests are likely to be needed.

If you are unsure which is best, contact the practice and we can advise. In some cases, an online appointment is the right first step and clinic review can be arranged afterwards if necessary. As a general guide, an in-person visit is usually more appropriate for chest symptoms, abdominal pain, skin changes that need examination, musculoskeletal problems, ear or throat symptoms, anything that may require a swab or procedure, and any new symptom where physical findings are likely to influence the assessment. Your GP will always advise you to come in if the consultation suggests that examination or testing would be clinically important.

“I called at 5.15pm, in pain and knowing that I needed antibiotics. In five minutes the receptionist had spoken to the doctor and she called me back for a telephone consultation. By 6pm I had picked up my filled prescription. I simply could not have asked for better service.”
