Private health checks are most useful when they do more than generate a set of numbers. A health check should begin with a proper medical discussion, lead to the right tests for the individual patient, and end with clear interpretation and sensible next steps.

At Basuto Medical Centre, our health checks in Fulham are GP-led from the outset. Every assessment begins with a 30-minute consultation so that your doctor can understand your symptoms, risk factors, medical history, family history, and any specific concerns before recommending testing. That may involve a targeted blood test, a broader health screening package, or a more comprehensive review such as an executive health check, depending on what is clinically appropriate.

Some patients come to us because they are tired, concerned about cholesterol, worried about diabetes risk, or want thyroid, hormone or nutritional testing. Others want a preventive review because they have reached a stage of life where they would like a clearer picture of their health, even if they feel broadly well. Both are valid reasons to book.

Why GP-Led Testing

GP-Led Health Assessment

A GP-led health check begins with a clinical discussion rather than a test list — understanding why you are booking, what symptoms or risk factors are relevant, and which investigations are likely to answer the question in front of you. Results are then interpreted within that context, not delivered as raw data.

Borderline results require clinical judgement. Normal results do not always exclude a problem. Follow-up may involve repeat testing, treatment, monitoring, lifestyle advice, or referral — depending on the clinical picture, not just the numbers.

Appointments are available for adults, children and families. No registration is required, and attending privately does not affect your NHS GP registration.

Results, Follow-Up and Onward Care

Health checks at Basuto sit within a broader general practice model. Depending on your results, the next step may be reassurance, a follow-up GP review, treatment, repeat testing, lifestyle advice, or referral for further investigation. Hormone-related concerns often connect to women’s health or men’s health pathways. Metabolic or weight-related findings may link with weight management. Family health checks may involve children’s health alongside adult review.

Investigation is more useful when it connects directly to a clinical plan. Your GP can arrange specialist referrals, prescriptions, or follow-up consultations — all from the same practice.

For patients who want ongoing access and regular monitoring, membership makes repeat consultations and follow-up more cost-effective.

Choose Your Route

Blood tests or health screening?

Blood tests are usually more targeted and used to investigate a specific question — fatigue, thyroid symptoms, hormonal changes, cholesterol, inflammation or ongoing symptoms that need investigating. Tests are GP-ordered, with results reviewed and explained by your doctor.

Health screening is broader and looks across cardiovascular, metabolic, hormonal and preventive markers in a more comprehensive way. It is best suited to patients who want a wider review rather than a single targeted investigation. Options include Well Man Check, Well Woman Check and Executive Health Check.

Patients who are uncertain which route is appropriate can discuss this at the consultation. The purpose of a GP-led appointment is to guide the decision based on your clinical picture.

“I called at 5.15pm, in pain and knowing that I needed antibiotics. In five minutes the receptionist had spoken to the doctor and she called me back for a telephone consultation. By 6pm I had picked up my filled prescription. I simply could not have asked for better service.”

The Process

What happens when you book a health check?

Common reasons for booking include persistent fatigue, cardiovascular risk assessment, cholesterol concerns, thyroid or hormonal symptoms, diabetes screening, unexplained weight change, and preventive midlife review. Every health check at Basuto starts with a GP consultation.

Your GP may review your current symptoms, past medical history, medication, family history, blood pressure, weight trends, lifestyle factors, and any previous results you already have. That information helps determine which tests are genuinely useful. In some cases, it also helps identify which tests are unlikely to change management and are therefore not necessary.

Once results are back, your GP reviews them with you and explains clearly what was found. If everything is normal, that is confirmed. If something is borderline or abnormal, the discussion focuses on whether the finding requires action, monitoring, or further investigation — and what that looks like in practice.

Because appointments are 30 minutes, there is time to discuss results properly and ask questions.

Same-day appointments available. Book online or call 020 7736 7557.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

What blood tests do you offer?

We offer a wide range of GP-ordered blood tests, including full blood count, cholesterol and lipids, thyroid function, hormone panels, vitamin and nutritional testing, and broader preventive screening. If you are unsure which test is most appropriate, your GP will advise during the consultation.

How quickly do results come back?

Most results are available within 24–72 hours, depending on the test. Your GP will review the results, explain what they mean clearly, and advise on any next steps.

Do I need a GP appointment for a blood test?

Yes. Every health check or blood test begins with a GP consultation so the right tests can be selected and the results properly interpreted in context.

What is the difference between a blood test and a health screening?

A blood test is usually more targeted and used to investigate a specific question — thyroid symptoms, cholesterol, fatigue or hormone changes. A health screening package is broader and looks across cardiovascular, metabolic, hormonal and preventive markers. This page acts as the starting point — your GP will help you decide which route is most appropriate.

Can you arrange specialist referrals based on results?

Yes. If your results suggest that you need further investigation or specialist support, your GP can arrange a referral directly from the practice.

How much does a health check cost?

A 30-minute GP consultation costs £150. The total cost depends on which tests or screening package are recommended during the appointment. Patients who expect to use the practice more regularly may find membership more cost-effective for ongoing monitoring and follow-up.

Do I need to fast before a blood test?

Some blood tests do require fasting, while others do not. If fasting is needed, we will tell you clearly before your appointment or test.

What happens if something abnormal shows up?

Your GP will explain what it may mean and recommend the next step, which could include repeat testing, monitoring, treatment or referral.

Which screening package is right for me?

That depends on your symptoms, risk factors, medical history and what you want to understand. Your GP will advise whether a Well Man Check, Well Woman Check, Executive Health Check, Cancer Screening or a different route makes most sense.
