CONSULTATION
30 Minutes
Time to explain and answer questions
Cervical screening is one of those appointments many people know they should book, but still put off. Sometimes it is because life gets in the way. Sometimes it is because the appointment feels uncomfortable, worrying or easy to delay.
As part of our women’s health service, we offer private cervical screening appointments in a calm clinical setting, with time to answer questions properly and explain what happens next.
Why It Matters
What cervical screening is and why it matters
A cervical screening test (smear test) checks for changes in the cells of the cervix that could develop into cervical cancer if left untreated. It is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer.
The NHS invites women aged 25–64 for regular screening, but many patients prefer a private appointment because they want more time, a calmer setting, or simply do not want to wait for an NHS slot.
Your Appointment
What happens at the appointment
Your GP will explain every step before and during the test. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes. You will be in a private, calm clinical setting with a doctor who has time to answer your questions and make the experience as comfortable as possible.
If you have been putting off cervical screening because of nerves or practical barriers, a private appointment can remove some of those obstacles. The 30-minute consultation gives time for the test itself and for any wider women’s health concerns you want to discuss.
Results
Results and what they mean
Most cervical screening results are normal. If cell changes are found, your GP will explain what the result means, whether it needs monitoring, and what the follow-up pathway looks like.
If specialist referral is needed — for example, for colposcopy — your GP can arrange that directly. The aim is to make the process clear and manageable, not alarming.
“Amazing private practise. Ample time to discuss any problems and I always leave feeling reassured.”

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I have a smear test?
The NHS recommends every 3 years for women aged 25–49, and every 5 years for women aged 50–64. Your GP can advise on the right interval for you.
Is the appointment uncomfortable?
The test takes only a few minutes and should not be painful. Some patients find it slightly uncomfortable. Your GP will explain each step and go at your pace.
What happens if the result is abnormal?
Your GP will explain what the result means and arrange follow-up. That may include a repeat test, monitoring, or a referral for colposcopy. Most cell changes are not cancer.
Can I discuss other women’s health concerns at the same appointment?
Yes. The 30-minute consultation gives time for the smear test and for any other women’s health questions — hormonal concerns, contraception, menopause or general wellbeing.
