Online GP appointments are useful, but they are not a solution for everything. Patients usually want honest guidance on when video works well and when it is better to come in.

That honesty tends to build trust rather than reduce bookings.

When online works particularly well

Video appointments often work well for follow-up, medication reviews, discussions about symptoms that do not obviously need examination, results reviews, sick notes, and straightforward practical advice.

They are also useful for patients trying to fit healthcare around work, childcare or travel.

When face-to-face is better

Some concerns clearly need examination. Chest symptoms, abdominal pain, injuries, ear problems, many children’s illnesses and anything that feels difficult to assess remotely are often better seen in person.

A same-day in-person appointment may be the better option when symptoms are new, worsening, or need physical assessment.

When face-to-face GP care is better

“Online care works best when it is used well rather than overused. Patients appreciate that distinction.”

Continuity of care with online appointments

Why continuity matters online as well

The value of an online appointment is not only convenience. It is also continuity. Patients often want access to the same practice and the same tone of care, just in a different format.

That is very different from a generic telehealth service.

What patients can still get done online

Where appropriate, patients may still be able to discuss results, arrange follow-up, review medication, request a referral, or move into an in-person appointment if that turns out to be the better next step.

The appointment should still move things forward.

Common questions

What can be dealt with online?

Follow-ups, medication reviews, results discussions, repeat prescriptions, sick notes, and straightforward advice where examination is not needed.

When should I come in instead?

When symptoms are new, worsening, or likely to need physical examination. Same-day in-person appointments are available.

Can I get a prescription after a video appointment?

Yes, where clinically appropriate. Private prescriptions can be issued following a video consultation.
