WOMEN’S HEALTH

Women’s Health

Women’s health concerns often overlap. Patients may present with cycle change, menopausal symptoms, pelvic pain, fatigue, contraception questions or fertility concerns, but a thorough assessment often shows that hormones, bleeding, mood, energy and wider health are closely linked and need to be considered together.

Women’s health is rarely just about one symptom. A patient may book because of one clear problem, such as heavy periods, pelvic pain, contraception questions, menopausal symptoms, fatigue, low mood, or concerns about hormone change. Once the history is taken properly, it is common to find that symptoms overlap across several areas and need a more joined-up plan than a single isolated answer.

At Basuto Medical Centre, our women’s health service in Fulham provides private medical assessment and follow-through for women at different stages of life. The focus is on careful clinical assessment, clear explanations, and a sensible onward plan — from period problems and contraception to perimenopause and menopause, hormonal symptoms, fertility questions, and preventive health review.

Some patients come because they want quicker access to a doctor. Others want more time, a more thorough discussion, or continuity with a practice that can manage both the immediate issue and the next step. In women’s health, that often matters because symptoms may have developed gradually, may affect several aspects of life at once, or may sit in the overlap between hormone health, general practice, mental wellbeing, screening, and preventive care.

About the Practice

How Women’s Health Appointments Work

A good women’s health service should not reduce every concern to a single narrow pathway. Some patients need menopause assessment. Some need contraception advice. Some need investigation of period change, pelvic symptoms, fatigue, low iron, thyroid symptoms, or mood change. Some are not sure what they need yet and simply want a doctor who can assess the picture properly and guide the next step. The clinical questions at 22 are usually different from those at 42 or 52 — younger women may attend because of cycle irregularity, contraception, suspected PCOS or cervical screening, while midlife patients are often looking for help with changing periods, vasomotor symptoms, sleep disturbance, or uncertainty around perimenopause.

Hormones matter, but they are not the only explanation for common symptoms. Heavy bleeding can affect iron levels. Fatigue may reflect sleep disruption, thyroid dysfunction, anaemia, or medication effects as well as hormone change. Good care begins by taking the full history seriously rather than forcing symptoms into a single explanation too early. Every consultation is 30 minutes, which gives your doctor time to take a proper history, understand what has been happening, and talk through the next step. If you need a prescription, blood tests, screening, follow-up or specialist referral, these can often be arranged as part of the same visit.

Women book for many different reasons. If your main concern is cycle change, heavy periods or hormonal symptoms, a menopause and HRT assessment or PCOS review may be the most relevant starting point. If you are due for preventive screening, cervical screening can be arranged. If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, see antenatal care. Other common reasons for booking include contraception reviews, fertility questions, perimenopause symptoms, menopause symptoms, sleep disturbance, mood change, vaginal dryness, urinary symptoms, low energy, unexplained weight change, or simply the wish to review health more thoroughly at a particular stage of life. You do not need to register with us to book, and you do not need to leave your NHS GP.

Same-Day Access

Same-day women’s health appointments in Fulham

One of the main reasons patients choose a private GP is speed. If something has changed, worsened, or is simply causing concern now, you may not want to wait days or weeks just to begin the process.

We keep same-day appointments available wherever possible so patients can be assessed promptly. If you need advice but cannot attend in person, a phone or video appointment may also be appropriate. If an examination is likely to be important, we will advise you to come into the practice instead.

What patients usually find most useful is not simply faster access. It is having enough time for a proper hormonal, reproductive and clinical history before any decisions are made.

“I called at 5.15pm, in pain and knowing that I needed antibiotics. In five minutes the receptionist had spoken to the doctor and she called me back for a telephone consultation. By 6pm I had picked up my filled prescription. I simply could not have asked for better service.”

Your Appointment

What happens at a women’s health appointment?

Here is what to expect when you attend a women’s health appointment at Basuto.

A women’s health consultation usually begins with a detailed history. That includes the main symptom, how long it has been present, whether there is any pattern to it, menstrual or reproductive history where relevant, past medical history, medication, contraception, family history, and the practical effect on day-to-day life. If examination is needed, this can be carried out during the consultation.

Your GP will then explain what they think may be going on, whether blood tests, Prescriptions or Referrals are needed, and what the next step should be. Sometimes that next step is reassurance. Sometimes it is testing, monitoring, treatment, or onward specialist input. Often, it is a combination.

With 30 minutes, there is usually time to take a full history, discuss findings, and agree on a practical next step before you leave.

Continuity

Ongoing Women’s Health Care and Follow-Up

In women’s health, continuity with the same doctor often changes the quality of the care.

Patients often tell us they value being able to come back to a doctor who knows their history, understands what has already been tried, and has a fuller picture of their health. That matters for menopause and HRT, hormone-related symptoms, fertility concerns, contraception reviews, cervical screening, and any problem that benefits from follow-up rather than one-off advice. Continuity with a practice that understands the broader picture makes each consultation more useful, particularly when symptoms evolve or new concerns emerge alongside existing ones.

If you expect to use the practice more regularly, Memberships can make that continuity easier, and more cost-effective.

Same-day appointments available. Book online or call 020 7736 7557.

Coordinated Care

Investigations, Prescribing and Referrals

A consultation is most useful when it leads to a clear clinical next step rather than a vague recommendation to monitor symptoms.

If your doctor thinks hormone blood tests or other blood work would help clarify the picture, we can arrange them quickly. If treatment is appropriate, a private prescription can be issued. If you need specialist input, we can prepare referrals to gynaecology, endocrinology or fertility services. If broader preventive review is useful, we can connect this with health checks or a Well Woman Check. If follow-up is needed, this can be organised through the same practice.

This approach keeps the clinical pathway coherent. Hormone testing, prescribing, referral and follow-up can be coordinated through the same practice rather than managed across disconnected providers.

Common Questions

Common Questions About Women’s Health Appointments

What women’s health concerns can you help with?

A women’s health appointment can help with period changes, heavy or painful periods, pelvic symptoms, contraception questions, hormonal symptoms, perimenopause, menopause and HRT, PCOS, fertility questions, cervical screening, vaginal and urinary symptoms, fatigue, preventive health questions, and broader concerns that may need investigation or onward referral.

Can I discuss women’s health in an online appointment?

Yes. Many women’s health concerns can be discussed in a video or phone appointment, especially where the first step is reviewing symptoms, discussing results, or talking through treatment options. If an examination is needed, we will advise you to come in.

Do you offer hormone blood tests?

Yes. Where appropriate, your GP can arrange hormone blood tests as part of a women’s health consultation. These may be helpful for symptoms relating to menopause, fertility, cycle changes, PCOS or other hormonal concerns.

Can I still keep my NHS GP if I book privately?

Yes. Private GP care at Basuto does not affect your NHS registration. Many patients use private and NHS care alongside each other. If your GP thinks further investigation is needed, we can arrange blood tests, onward referral and follow-up through the practice.

Do I need to register first?

No. You do not need to register before booking, and there is no catchment area or waiting list.

Can I book for menopause or HRT support?

Yes. These are common reasons patients book, especially for Menopause and HRT. Your GP can talk you through symptoms, testing where appropriate, treatment options and what follow up may be needed.
