TRAVEL HEALTH

Travel Clinic in Fulham

Travel health is best approached as part of proper medical planning, not as a last-minute box-ticking exercise. A good travel appointment should give you enough time to review your itinerary, medical history, vaccination status, and any factors that may affect prescribing or advice — including children’s health, pregnancy, long-term conditions, and medication interactions.

Vaccine requirements, malaria risk, medication interactions and health precautions vary significantly by destination. A travel consultation ensures the advice is specific to where you are going, how you are travelling, and what your medical background requires. That is particularly important if your trip is complex, involves several destinations, includes rural travel, or is affected by pregnancy, long-term conditions, or regular medication.

At Basuto Medical Centre, our travel clinic is designed for adults, children and families who want destination-specific advice, vaccine guidance and antimalarial prescribing where appropriate. Some patients book well in advance and want everything organised properly before departure. Others book later because travel has crept up on them and they want practical advice without unnecessary delay.

Whether you are travelling for a holiday, work trip, long-stay visit, safari, backpacking itinerary or family travel abroad, the aim is a clear medical assessment, appropriate recommendations, and a straightforward next step. For broader vaccination information, see our dedicated page. For children’s travel health, the paediatric hub may also be useful.

About the Practice

How Travel Health Appointments Work

A travel consultation should take account of far more than a destination name. The relevant risks can change depending on the season of travel, whether you are staying in urban or rural areas, how long you will be away, whether you are visiting friends and relatives, and whether you may need access to medical care while abroad. The appointment should also take account of your vaccination history, past medical history, any allergies, regular prescriptions, and factors such as pregnancy or immunosuppression.

Every standard travel consultation is 30 minutes. That gives your doctor time to review your itinerary, discuss your medical background, check relevant vaccine history where possible, explain what may be recommended for your destination, and talk through the next step. If you need vaccines, antimalarial medication, travel advice, or a fit-to-fly letter, these can often be arranged as part of the same process.

You do not need to register with us to book, and you do not need to leave your NHS GP. Many patients use our travel clinic alongside NHS services when they want quicker access, more time, or the reassurance of discussing travel health within an established private GP practice.

TRAVEL PLANNING

Travel health advice with enough time to prepare properly

One of the main reasons patients book a private travel clinic is time. Travel health is easy to put off, but vaccine schedules, malaria prevention and medical preparation are much easier when looked at properly before departure.

We recommend booking a travel appointment 4 to 6 weeks before travel where possible. That gives enough time for any recommended vaccines to take effect and for multi-dose courses to be planned if needed. If your trip is sooner than that, it is still worth getting in touch, as there may still be useful advice, vaccinations or prescriptions we can help with.

For many patients, the value of a travel clinic appointment is not only access to vaccines or prescriptions. It is having enough time with a doctor to review the trip properly and leave with a clearer plan.

Your Appointment

What happens at a travel clinic appointment?

Here is what to expect when you attend a travel health appointment at Basuto.

At the start of your appointment, your doctor will talk through your destination, the length and type of trip, your accommodation, planned activities, your medical history, and any questions or concerns you already have. If relevant, we will also review existing medication, allergies, pregnancy status, previous vaccine history, or any condition that could affect what is recommended.

Your GP will then explain which travel vaccines or precautions may be relevant, whether antimalarial medication is appropriate, and what other health advice may be sensible for the journey. That may include insect-bite prevention, food and water advice, altitude considerations, deep vein thrombosis risk, travelling with medication, or planning for children.

Sometimes the next step is straightforward reassurance. Sometimes it is a vaccination plan. Sometimes it is a private prescription, a certificate, or advice tailored to a more complex itinerary. What matters is that the appointment helps you prepare properly rather than leaving things uncertain. Because appointments are 30 minutes as standard, there is usually enough time to ask questions and leave with a clearer idea of what you need before you travel.

Continuity

A travel clinic within an established private GP practice

Travel health advice is more useful when your doctor can also see the broader medical picture.

Patients often tell us they value discussing travel plans with a doctor who can look at the bigger picture, especially if they have a long-term condition, are pregnant, take regular medication, are travelling with children, or may need follow-up support after the initial appointment.

That matters because vaccine suitability, antimalarial prescribing and destination-specific precautions often depend on medical history, current medication and individual risk — not just where you are going. If you already use the practice for private GP care, that continuity can make travel planning simpler. If you only need a one-off travel appointment, you can simply book when needed.

Same-day appointments available. Book online or call 020 7736 7557.

Vaccines, Prescribing and Certificates

Travel Health Assessment and Prescribing

A travel consultation should result in a practical plan, not a list of possibilities.

If your doctor thinks a vaccine is appropriate, we can advise on timing and arrange administration where available. If antimalarial medication is recommended, a private prescription can be issued. If you need a fit-to-fly letter or another travel-related medical certificate, this can also be discussed during the same process.

This keeps the process straightforward. Vaccine scheduling, antimalarial prescribing and any certificates can be arranged from the same appointment rather than requiring separate steps afterwards.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I book a travel clinic appointment?

Ideally 4 to 6 weeks before travel. Some vaccines need time to become effective, and some require more than one dose. If you are travelling sooner than that, it is still worth booking as we may still be able to help.

Can you provide travel vaccines for children?

Yes. We see children as well as adults for travel health advice and vaccine planning.

Can you prescribe antimalarials?

Yes. If antimalarial medication is appropriate for your destination and medical background, your GP can issue a private prescription.

Which travel vaccines do I need?

That depends on where you are travelling, how long you are away, the type of trip, and your medical history. Your GP will advise on what may be relevant for your destination.

Do I need to register first?

No. You can book a travel clinic appointment without registering with the practice and without leaving your NHS GP.

Do you offer fit-to-fly letters?

Yes, where clinically appropriate. If you need a fit-to-fly letter or another medical certificate for travel, this can be discussed during your appointment.

Can you help if I am travelling with a medical condition?

Yes. This is one of the advantages of booking through a private GP practice rather than a more transactional travel service. We can take your wider health into account.

Do you see families travelling together?

Yes. We see adults, children and families, and family travel appointments are often particularly helpful where several people are travelling on the same itinerary.
