Hormone symptoms can be frustrating because they often overlap with everyday life. Low energy, mood changes, poor sleep, cycle changes, reduced libido, weight shifts, hot flushes, hair thinning or fertility concerns do not always point neatly in one direction, which is exactly why hormone testing can be helpful when the pattern is not adding up.

At Basuto Medical Centre, we provide private hormone blood tests in Fulham for patients who want GP oversight, clearer interpretation, and a better understanding of what their results may or may not explain.

Whether you are looking into menopause symptoms, irregular periods, fertility questions, possible low testosterone, PCOS concerns, or broader endocrine symptoms, we aim to make the process straightforward from the first appointment.

About the Appointment

GP-Led Hormone Testing

Some patients book because they feel something has shifted and want a clearer explanation. Others come with a more specific question: whether menopause may be contributing, whether testosterone is low, whether fertility or cycle changes need looking into, or whether symptoms point towards a wider hormone imbalance. The appointment is about deciding which hormones are actually worth checking and making sure the results are interpreted properly.

Hormone testing can sit within wider blood tests, health screening, women’s health, men’s health and private GP care. That matters because hormone symptoms often overlap with thyroid problems, nutritional deficiency, stress, sleep disruption and broader health changes.

Your Appointment

What happens at a hormone blood test appointment?

A good hormone blood test appointment should feel clear, practical and joined up.

At the start of the consultation, your doctor will talk through the symptoms that brought you in, how long they have been happening, whether they follow any pattern, what medications you take, and whether there are related concerns such as thyroid symptoms, stress, sleep disruption, fertility issues or previous abnormal results.

Where reproductive hormones are involved, timing can matter. Some hormones are best checked at a particular point in the cycle. Testosterone in men is usually best tested in the morning. Your GP will explain this clearly so the results are actually useful.

Once results are back, your doctor reviews them with you and explains what they mean in plain language. What matters is that you leave with a clearer understanding of whether hormones are genuinely part of the picture and what should happen next.

When Patients Book

When hormone testing is usually useful

Hormone blood tests are often booked when symptoms feel real but difficult to pin down. They can also be useful when monitoring treatment or building a broader picture around fertility, reproductive health or endocrine symptoms.

  • Menopause symptoms or perimenopause concerns
  • Irregular periods or cycle changes
  • Fertility concerns or investigation
  • Low testosterone symptoms in men
  • Mood, energy or libido changes
  • PCOS investigation
  • Monitoring existing hormone treatment

After the Result

What happens after the result

Your GP will explain what the results mean for your specific situation. For menopause, that may include a conversation about HRT. For PCOS, it may lead to further investigation. For low testosterone symptoms, your doctor can discuss whether testosterone replacement therapy may be appropriate.

Where further specialist input is needed — such as fertility investigation, endocrinology or gynaecology — your GP can arrange a referral directly. For some patients, the result mainly supports reassurance. For others, it provides the missing piece that helps move things forward more clearly.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

What hormones do you test for?

That depends on the clinical question. Common panels may include oestrogen, progesterone, FSH, LH, testosterone, SHBG, prolactin, DHEA-S and thyroid function. Your GP will decide which tests are appropriate based on your symptoms.

Does timing of the test matter?

Yes, for some hormones. Female reproductive hormones are often best tested on specific days of the menstrual cycle. Testosterone in men is usually best tested in the morning. Your GP will advise on timing when you book.

Can you help with menopause hormone testing?

Yes. We can test relevant markers and discuss whether HRT or other management may be appropriate based on your symptoms and results.

Can you test testosterone levels?

Yes. We offer testosterone testing for men experiencing fatigue, low mood, reduced libido or related symptoms. See our TRT page for more on testosterone replacement therapy.

Do I need a GP consultation first?

Usually, yes. A GP consultation helps make sure the right hormone tests are being arranged and that the results are interpreted properly in context.

Can hormone blood tests be part of a wider health review?

Yes. Hormone testing is often most useful when looked at alongside wider blood tests, health checks or health screening.

Do I need to register with the practice first?

No. You do not need to register with us to book a private hormone blood test, and you can still keep your NHS GP.

How do I book?

You can book online or call 020 7736 7557 to arrange your appointment.
