FIT NOTE
Included
Issued at your consultation where appropriate
A fit note should reflect proper medical judgement, not just administrative paperwork.
At Basuto Medical Centre, we assess patients through a standard private GP consultation when they need sick notes, fit notes or other medical certificates for work, study or related purposes. The consultation is designed to establish what is affecting your ability to work, whether time away is appropriate, and whether treatment, review or further assessment is also needed.
Our standard appointments are 30 minutes. That gives your GP time to take a proper history, assess the problem in context, and decide whether a fit note is justified. If it is, the note can be issued during the consultation. If the underlying issue needs more than documentation alone, your GP can also arrange treatment, testing, follow-up or referral as appropriate.

Your Appointment
Assessment first, documentation second
Your GP will review the symptoms, the timeline, what your work involves, whether rest or modified duties make sense, and whether any treatment, review or referral is needed as well. In some cases, the outcome is straightforward: a fit note for a defined period. In others, the more useful part of the appointment is the advice around recovery, medication, further tests or follow-up.
This matters because a fit note is most useful when it reflects what is clinically reasonable. In some cases, complete time away from work is appropriate. In others, the better option may be a shorter period off, amended duties, altered hours or a phased return. A fit note can state that you are not fit for work, or that you may be fit for work with adjustments. Your GP will discuss which applies and explain what the note will say before it is issued. Employers cannot require a fit note for absences of seven days or fewer — a self-certification is sufficient for that period. For longer absences, the fit note provides the formal medical documentation your employer needs.
“As always, excellent advice and support given in an unhurried and utterly professional manner.”

Beyond the Paperwork
When a note is not the whole answer
If symptoms are ongoing, the appointment may also need to lead to treatment, review, blood tests or referral rather than stopping at the paperwork. A prescription, follow-up plan or further investigation may be the more important outcome of the consultation.
That is often the difference between a useful appointment and a purely administrative one. If the underlying issue is not improving, the note may be only one part of what needs to happen.
Online or In Person?
Choosing the right type of appointment
Many sick note and fit note appointments can be managed by video consultation, particularly where the symptoms and circumstances are straightforward and do not require examination. If examination, testing or closer assessment is likely to be needed, an in-person appointment is usually more appropriate.
If you need documentation quickly, same-day appointments may be available depending on timing and clinical suitability.
