BLOOD TESTS
How Long Do Blood Test Results Take?
Typical turnaround times for private blood tests, why timings vary, and why interpretation matters as much as speed.
For most routine blood tests, results are usually available within 24 to 72 hours. Some more specialised tests — certain hormone panels, autoimmune markers, or genetic tests — can take longer, occasionally up to a week or more depending on the laboratory. The timing also depends on when the sample is taken. Blood drawn on a Friday afternoon may not be processed until the following week, while a Monday morning sample typically returns faster.
Understanding what affects turnaround time — and what should happen once results arrive — helps set realistic expectations and reduces the anxiety that often comes with waiting.

Why interpretation matters as much as speed
Fast results are useful, but only if they lead to clarity. A number outside a reference range is not automatically serious — some mildly elevated liver enzymes can be transient, and a marginally low vitamin D level may not explain the symptoms you are concerned about. Equally, a result within range does not always rule everything out. Thyroid function can be borderline-normal and still be clinically relevant when other symptoms are present. That is why interpretation by a GP who knows your history is usually more valuable than speed alone.
Common tests and typical turnaround
A full blood count, liver function, kidney function and basic metabolic markers typically return within 24 to 48 hours. Thyroid function and cholesterol panels are also usually processed quickly. Iron studies, vitamin B12, folate and vitamin D tend to return in a similar window. Hormone testing — including oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, FSH and LH — may take slightly longer depending on the laboratory, particularly if the panel is broader or if the sample is sent to a specialist reference lab.
More specialised markers — such as cortisol profiles, coeliac antibodies, autoimmune panels, tumour markers or allergy testing — can take up to 5 to 7 working days. If a test is expected to take longer than usual, your GP will explain this at the time of ordering so you are not left waiting without context.
Results review
What happens when your results are back
At Basuto, results are reviewed by the GP who ordered the tests. Your doctor will explain whether findings are normal, borderline or abnormal and what the next step should be. That review can often be handled by phone or video if no examination is needed. If something unexpected is found, treatment, repeat testing, prescriptions, referrals or broader health screening can be arranged from the same point of care.

Urgent testing
When speed genuinely matters
For most patients, 24 to 72 hours is fast enough. Where speed becomes more important is when symptoms are acute, when a treatment decision depends on the result, or when a patient has been waiting too long elsewhere and wants the process to move forward. Basuto keeps same-day appointments available where possible, which means bloods can often be taken on the same day as the consultation rather than requiring a separate visit.
