BLOOD TESTS
Can You Book a Blood Test Without Seeing Your NHS GP?
Yes — but the more important question is whether the private route still gives you proper medical oversight.
Many patients use private care for blood tests without seeing their NHS GP first. Common reasons include wanting faster access — particularly when NHS waiting times make it difficult to be seen within a reasonable period — wanting more time to discuss symptoms than a 10-minute NHS appointment allows, wanting a clearer explanation of what is being checked and why, or wanting to arrange follow-up testing, monitoring or treatment without having to navigate a fragmented referral process.
The more important question is not whether you can bypass your NHS GP. It is whether the private route still gives you proper medical oversight. Blood tests are most useful when a doctor has reviewed your symptoms first, chosen tests that are likely to answer the right question, and is available to explain the results and decide the next step afterwards.

How private blood testing works alongside NHS care
At Basuto Medical Centre, you do not need to register with the practice and you do not need to leave your NHS GP to book private blood tests. Many patients use private and NHS care alongside each other — for example, using their NHS GP for ongoing prescriptions and routine care, while using a private practice for faster access to investigations, second opinions, or areas where they want more time and continuity. The two are not mutually exclusive.
If your private GP recommends treatment, a prescription can be issued during the same appointment. If further investigation is needed, referrals to specialists can be arranged privately or on the NHS. If results suggest ongoing monitoring, that can be handled through the same practice rather than starting again elsewhere.
When it helps
When private blood tests are particularly useful
Private blood testing is often most useful when patients want a broader or more targeted panel than the NHS would typically arrange, when symptoms have been ongoing and the patient wants a more thorough assessment, when timing matters — such as monitoring a treatment response or catching a problem before it worsens — or when the patient simply wants the reassurance of longer consultation time and clearer explanation of results. It can also be valuable for preventive health screening, particularly for patients over 40 who want a baseline cardiovascular, metabolic and hormonal review.

Quality matters
What to look for in a private blood test service
Not all private blood test services are equal. The key distinction is whether a qualified GP is involved in choosing the tests, reviewing the results, and advising on what should happen next. Some services offer direct-to-consumer panels where no doctor is involved in the decision-making. For most patients, particularly those with symptoms, medical history, or medication that affects interpretation, a GP-led consultation is a safer and more productive starting point. At Basuto, the appointment can feed naturally into health checks, women’s health, men’s health or referral planning where needed.
