PRF TREATMENT

What to Expect After PRF Treatment

Practical recovery information, realistic timelines, and why regenerative treatments are judged over time rather than immediately.

PRF is a regenerative treatment, which means its effects develop gradually rather than appearing immediately. Patients sometimes expect visible results within days — but the biological mechanism involves stimulating growth factors and cellular processes that work over weeks and months. Understanding the realistic timeline, normal post-treatment sensations, and how progress is assessed helps set appropriate expectations.

What to expect varies depending on whether PRF was used for hair or skin, and how many sessions are planned.

Immediately after treatment

For scalp-focused PRF (hair restoration), patients may experience some tenderness, mild swelling, and small injection marks at the treatment sites. These are normal and typically settle within 24–48 hours. Some patients describe a sensation of tightness or mild headache for the rest of the day. There is usually no significant downtime — most patients return to normal activities the same day. Patients are generally advised to avoid washing the hair for 12–24 hours, avoid vigorous exercise for 24–48 hours, and avoid direct heat (saunas, very hot showers) for a few days.

For facial or skin-focused PRF, mild redness, swelling and injection marks are expected. The face may appear slightly puffy for 1–2 days. Bruising is possible but usually minor. Patients can typically apply mineral sunscreen and mineral makeup the following day, though this varies by protocol.

Results timeline

When results become visible

For PRF for hair loss, visible changes are not expected after a single session. Hair growth cycles take months, and the regenerative effect of PRF needs time to influence follicle activity. Most treatment plans involve 3–4 sessions over several months, and patients are typically advised to assess results at 4–6 months after the start of treatment.

Some patients notice reduced shedding before visible regrowth. Others notice finer new hairs appearing at the parting or hairline. The response varies — some patients respond well, others more modestly. For skin-focused PRF, gradual improvement in texture, tone and firmness may become noticeable over 4–8 weeks.

Follow-up and maintenance

After the initial treatment course, some patients benefit from maintenance sessions at longer intervals — typically every 6–12 months — to sustain the effect. The need for maintenance depends on the underlying condition, the response to treatment, and whether other treatments (such as minoxidil or finasteride for hair, or topical retinoids for skin) are being used alongside. Your clinician will advise on the right interval based on your individual response.

Honest expectations

Managing expectations honestly

PRF is not a guaranteed treatment and not every patient will see the results they hope for. The most useful approach is to set clear expectations before starting, agree on how progress will be assessed, and review honestly after the initial course to determine whether maintenance is worthwhile.

At Basuto, PRF is discussed within a clinical context — not as a standalone product — so that patients understand where it fits, what else may be needed, and how to judge whether it has been effective. See PRF treatment for the full service page and hair restoration for broader assessment.
