FAMILY GP
Private GP for Families
How family GP care works at Basuto Medical Centre — continuity for adults, children and households who want a practice they can rely on over time.
Some households use a private GP occasionally — a one-off appointment when someone is unwell or needs a specific issue reviewed. Others want a practice they can return to over time, where the doctors know the family, understand the medical history, and can provide consistent, joined-up care across adults and children.
At Basuto Medical Centre, we see adults, children and families. Some patients register the whole household. Others start with one family member and find that continuity with the same practice becomes useful over time — for childhood illnesses, prescriptions, vaccinations, school and work letters, recurrent problems and preventive health work.

Why continuity matters for families
Ongoing family care works better when your doctor understands the household. Children’s recurrent infections, parental health concerns, medication histories, vaccination schedules, and the broader family context all benefit from a relationship that builds over time rather than starting from scratch at each visit. This is one of the practical advantages of a smaller, established practice. Patients are not allocated to whoever is next available. They can see a doctor who already knows them.

Membership
Pay-as-you-go or membership
Some families book as needed. Others choose membership because it reduces the per-appointment cost, includes prescriptions, offers priority booking, and makes it easier to use the practice regularly for the whole household. Families of three or more members registering together receive a 10% discount on the combined monthly membership total. Adult and under-16 plans can be mixed.
Common questions
Can I use Basuto as the GP for the whole family?
Yes. Basuto sees adults, children and older adolescents. Couples and families often register with the practice together so that one GP can hold a coherent picture of everyone’s care. Registration is optional rather than required, and there is no catchment area.
How does continuity work when different family members need appointments?
Patients can request the same GP for repeat appointments wherever possible, which helps continuity when managing ongoing issues across family members — medications that interact, shared infections, recurring paediatric concerns. For acute same-day needs, the first available GP may see the patient and record notes that the named GP can pick up on.
Can the same GP see both adults and children in our family?
Yes — our GPs see both. If a child has red-flag signs — struggling to breathe, unusually drowsy, a non-blanching rash, a seizure, or any situation that could be a medical emergency — call 999 or go to A&E rather than booking a private GP appointment. For non-emergency concerns in children, same-day private GP appointments are usually available.
