When to See a Private GP

A practical guide to when a private GP appointment is worth considering, what it is best suited for, and how it fits alongside NHS care.

Patients often ask whether a private GP appointment is the right route. In broad terms, it is useful when you need general medical assessment without unnecessary delay, when you want more time with a doctor, or when you want one practice to coordinate the next step.

It is not always about urgency. Many patients book because they want a more thorough consultation, clearer answers, or practical follow-through that would otherwise take several separate NHS appointments to arrange.

When to see a private GP at Basuto Medical Centre

Common reasons patients book a private GP

A new symptom that needs review without delay. A recurring issue that has not been resolved. A medication question or need for prescription review. Travel-related health advice or vaccinations. A family health concern affecting a child or household member. A request for preventive testing or health screening. The need to arrange blood tests, a referral or follow-up more quickly. Mental health concerns including anxiety, low mood or burnout. Women’s health concerns including menopause or hormonal symptoms. Men’s health concerns including testosterone, cardiovascular risk or prostate symptoms.

Continuity

When continuity is the main reason

Ongoing care works better when your doctor understands your history, your previous treatment, and the reasoning behind earlier decisions. This is especially relevant in general practice because many concerns do not fit neatly into a single isolated appointment. Patients who value this kind of continuity often find membership useful, particularly for families, patients with recurring concerns, and anyone who wants a named GP relationship over time.

Private GP alongside NHS care at Basuto Medical Centre

NHS and private

How private GP care works alongside the NHS

Using a private GP does not mean leaving the NHS. Many patients use both. They may book privately for faster access, longer consultations, a second opinion, or practical next steps, then continue other aspects of care through NHS services where appropriate. For many people, that balance makes the most sense.

Common questions

When is a private GP the right choice over NHS 111 or A&E?

A private GP is suited to non-emergency concerns where you want faster access or a longer appointment than the NHS can offer on that day. It is not an alternative to emergency care. If the situation could be a medical emergency — chest pain, stroke signs, severe difficulty breathing, serious injury, suspected sepsis, a non-blanching rash in a child — call 999 or go to A&E. NHS 111 is the right route when you are unsure whether a concern is urgent. Private GP sits alongside these services for problems that are not emergencies but still need prompt clinical review.

Is a private GP useful for chronic or long-term issues, or only for acute problems?

Both. Many patients book privately for ongoing concerns that benefit from continuity and longer appointments — medication reviews, chronic condition monitoring, hormonal symptoms, or health concerns that have been investigated without a clear answer. Acute same-day concerns are also a common reason to book, but they are not the only one.

Can I see a private GP for a second opinion alongside my NHS care?

Yes. Patients often use a private GP for a second opinion or a more detailed review when NHS care has been inconclusive or when waiting times are long. Records from your NHS GP can be reviewed with your consent, and the Basuto GP can write back to your NHS GP so that both sides of your care stay aligned.
