Understanding Anxiety

More than feeling stressed

Anxiety can present in different ways. Some patients describe constant worry that is difficult to switch off. Others are dealing with panic symptoms, poor sleep, physical tension, irritability, avoidance, or a sense that everyday life has narrowed around coping. It becomes a clinical concern when it starts to affect how you function — when worry becomes persistent, physical symptoms appear without clear cause, and everyday tasks feel harder to manage than they should.

At Basuto Medical Centre, private support for anxiety is available through confidential counselling with GP input where clinically appropriate. This means you can access psychological and medical support through the same practice, without needing to coordinate between separate services.

Common Symptoms

How anxiety commonly presents

Anxiety affects people differently, but common symptoms include persistent worry, difficulty relaxing, restlessness, racing heart or palpitations, sweating, disturbed sleep, poor concentration, irritability, gastrointestinal upset, panic attacks and avoidance of situations that feel overwhelming.

Physical symptoms of anxiety are often the reason patients first seek help. Where symptoms overlap with other conditions, a private GP review and blood tests can help rule out medical contributors and provide a clearer picture of what is happening.

Causes

What causes anxiety

There is rarely a single cause. Anxiety commonly develops through a combination of temperament, life stress, past experiences, physical health, disrupted sleep and sustained work pressure. For some patients, anxiety has been present for years in a manageable form before something tips the balance — a period of burnout, a health scare, a relationship change or a build-up of demands that leaves no space for recovery.

Anxiety often presents alongside other conditions. It frequently coexists with depression, trauma, ADHD and burnout. It can also overlap with physical symptoms that need separate attention, including hormonal changes, thyroid function, cardiovascular symptoms and chronic fatigue.

When to Seek Help

When anxiety needs professional support

It is worth seeking support when anxiety is:

  • affecting your ability to work, concentrate or make decisions
  • disrupting sleep or leaving you persistently exhausted
  • straining relationships or causing withdrawal from social life
  • causing panic attacks or avoidance of specific situations
  • making concentration, organisation or everyday tasks harder
  • contributing to physical symptoms such as chest tightness, nausea or headaches
  • linked to increased alcohol use, burnout or persistent low mood

Earlier intervention is generally more effective. You do not need to wait until anxiety becomes a crisis before seeking a professional conversation about what support may help.

How We Can Help

Private anxiety support at Basuto

At Basuto Medical Centre, anxiety support is available through private counselling and GP assessment. These can be accessed separately or together, depending on what is clinically appropriate. Counselling provides a structured, confidential space to work through what is driving the anxiety. GP input may be helpful where physical symptoms need review, where medication may be relevant, or where onward referral is appropriate.

For patients who need flexibility, same-day appointments and online appointments are available. Where medication is discussed, private prescriptions can be arranged through the practice.

Anxiety frequently overlaps with other conditions. If relevant, support is also available for depression, trauma, ADHD, addiction, menopause and HRT, and low testosterone and TRT.

Your Appointment

What to expect

Your first appointment is an opportunity to explain what has been happening, how long symptoms have been present, what feels most difficult, and what you are hoping support may help with. There is no pressure to have a formal diagnosis or to describe things in clinical terms.

The aim is to understand the situation clearly and decide on a practical next step. This may involve ongoing counselling, a GP review of physical symptoms, blood tests to rule out medical contributors, discussion of medication, specialist referral, or a structured plan for managing anxiety alongside work, sleep and daily life.

Same-day appointments available. Book online or call 020 7736 7557.
