Understanding Trauma
When the past continues to affect the present
Trauma affects people differently. Some patients experience intrusive memories, heightened vigilance, emotional numbing, disturbed sleep, panic, dissociation or persistent changes in trust and relationships. Others may simply recognise that a past event or period of life still shapes the present in a way that feels difficult to control. It can result from a wide range of experiences — abuse, neglect, violence, accidents, bereavement, medical events, childhood adversity or prolonged periods of stress, fear or powerlessness. What defines trauma clinically is not the event itself, but the way it continues to affect how someone thinks, feels, functions and relates to the world around them.
At Basuto Medical Centre, private support for trauma is available through confidential counselling — including EMDR-informed therapy where appropriate — with GP input where clinically indicated. This means psychological and medical support can be accessed through the same practice.

Common Symptoms
How trauma commonly presents
Trauma affects people differently depending on the nature of the experience, its duration, and the support available at the time. Common symptoms include intrusive memories or flashbacks, nightmares, emotional numbness or detachment, hypervigilance, difficulty trusting others, avoidance of reminders, sleep disturbance, irritability, difficulty concentrating, chronic tension, and a persistent sense of being unsafe.
Many patients do not immediately connect their current difficulties to past experiences. Physical symptoms such as chronic pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal problems and cardiovascular symptoms can also be linked to unresolved trauma. Where physical symptoms need attention, a private GP review and blood tests can be arranged through the same practice.
Types of Trauma
What causes trauma
Trauma can result from single events — such as an accident, assault, sudden loss or medical emergency — or from prolonged experiences such as childhood adversity, domestic abuse, bullying, neglect or sustained exposure to threat. Complex trauma, where harmful experiences were repeated or ongoing, often has deeper effects on self-perception, emotional regulation, trust and relationships.
Trauma frequently coexists with anxiety, depression, ADHD, addiction, sleep disorders and chronic physical health problems. These overlaps are common, and a practice that can consider psychological and medical factors together is better placed to support patients whose difficulties span more than one area.
When to Seek Help
When trauma needs professional support
It is worth seeking support when past experiences are:
- intruding into daily life through flashbacks, nightmares or unwanted memories
- causing emotional numbness, detachment or difficulty feeling connected
- making it harder to trust people, maintain relationships or feel safe
- disrupting sleep, concentration or the ability to function at work
- leading to avoidance of places, people or situations linked to the experience
- contributing to anxiety, depression, anger or self-destructive patterns
- affecting physical health through chronic tension, pain, fatigue or somatic symptoms
Trauma-related difficulties do not always resolve with time alone. Structured professional support — particularly when it includes trauma-focused approaches — is often needed to process what happened and reduce the hold it has on everyday life.

How We Can Help
Private trauma support at Basuto
At Basuto Medical Centre, trauma support is available through private counselling — including EMDR-informed therapy where clinically appropriate — and GP assessment. Counselling provides a structured, confidential space to process past experiences and develop strategies for managing their ongoing effects. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based approach that can help reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories.
Where physical symptoms need attention, or where medication or specialist referral may be appropriate, GP input can be arranged through the same practice. Patients who need flexibility can access online appointments.
Trauma frequently overlaps with other conditions. If relevant, support is also available for anxiety, depression, ADHD, and addiction.
Your Appointment
What to expect
Your first appointment is a private, structured conversation. You will have time to explain what has been happening, what feels most difficult, and what you are hoping support may help with. There is no pressure to disclose everything in the first session — the pace is guided by what feels manageable.
The aim is to understand the situation clearly and agree on a practical next step. This may involve ongoing counselling, EMDR-informed therapy, a GP review of physical symptoms, specialist referral, or a structured plan for managing the impact of trauma on work, sleep, relationships and daily life.
Same-day appointments available. Book online or call 020 7736 7557.
