STI Testing for Men: Symptoms, Timing, and When to Test

When STI testing is appropriate, why timing matters, and how to arrange testing through a private GP.

Men often seek STI advice after a new sexual contact, after developing symptoms, following a partner’s diagnosis, or simply because they want a routine check as part of responsible sexual health. The main clinical issue — beyond the anxiety — is timing. Each infection has a different incubation period and testing window, which means testing too early can produce a false-negative result, while waiting too long can allow an untreated infection to cause complications or be transmitted further.

When to arrange testing

Testing is appropriate if you have symptoms (discharge, pain on urination, genital ulcers, rash, testicular pain or swelling), after unprotected sex with a new or casual partner, following a partner’s positive result, or as a routine screen if you are sexually active with changing partners.

Common STIs and window periods

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are the most commonly tested bacterial STIs. Both can be asymptomatic. Testing is typically reliable from 2 weeks after exposure via urine sample or swab. Syphilis is detected via blood test, usually reliable from 4–6 weeks after exposure, though early-stage syphilis can present with a painless ulcer before blood tests become positive. HIV testing is reliable from 4–6 weeks with modern 4th-generation tests, though the definitive window is 3 months. Hepatitis B and C are detected via blood test, typically from 6–12 weeks after exposure. Herpes is usually diagnosed clinically when lesions are present; blood testing for herpes is not routinely recommended for asymptomatic screening due to interpretation complexity.

Testing

What testing involves

A comprehensive STI screen typically involves a urine sample for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, blood tests for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B, and swabs from any symptomatic areas where relevant. The consultation is confidential and takes place within a standard GP appointment. Results are usually available within a few days. If an infection is confirmed, treatment can be prescribed during the same pathway, and partner notification guidance is provided.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality

STI testing at Basuto is fully confidential. Results are not shared with your NHS GP unless you specifically request it. Many patients prefer private testing because they want discretion, faster access, or a longer consultation in which to discuss concerns openly. A general private GP appointment is the most practical starting point, with related testing arranged where appropriate.

Common questions

When is STI testing appropriate?

STI testing is appropriate after unprotected contact, after a new partner, when symptoms (discharge, discomfort, sores, rash) are present, at the request of a partner or to confirm health before a new relationship, and as part of routine sexual-health maintenance for anyone sexually active. There is no judgment attached to testing — it is clinical care.

Are there window periods to consider when timing the test?

Yes. Different infections have different window periods — the time between exposure and when a test can reliably detect the infection. This is why some tests are repeated after a set interval, and why the GP asks about timing of exposure before deciding which tests to run.

Is the consultation discreet?

Yes. Appointments are private, confidential and handled like any other clinical consultation. Results are managed in line with medical confidentiality and shared only with your consent.
